Assignment 2: Public To Private

This model shows the solid walls of the spaces i have deemed to be 'private'. These include bathrooms and bedrooms. It can be seen that Gehry has designated the top floor to be mostly private, while keeping all the private rooms of the bottom floor to one side of the house, leaving the rest of the floor space to be public.

These floor plans show the public, private and semi private rooms of the house. I have shown the right bedroom on the ground floor to be semi private due to the glass wall which allows viewing from the garden.

This plan of the ground floor shows what citizens would be able to see into the house from the street whilst walking past. Red is the most public, while orange shows what can be seen from specific angles.

Assignment 2: Formal Devices Analysis

Gehry used different methods to draw the observers eye to specific parts of the house.

The model shows how Gehry made the facades much more interesting by making strategic cuts into the corrugated iron. He also allowed the observer from the street to view into certain parts of the property.

Through the use of glass on the rear facade, Gehry is able to draw the backyard into the house.

By creating obscurely shaped windows Gehry draws attention to specific rooms (master bedroom, kitchen, dining room). This model not only shows a 1:20 scale model of hte kitchen skylight/window, but also shows what sort of views can be gained from looking out of the window and how much natural light is let into the room.

Assignment 2: Material Analysis

Using drawings to assist my model, I investigated the 4 main materials used by Gehry. These materials were masonry, glass, corrugated iron and wood. The 1:20 sacale model shows a particular section of the house where all 4 materials intersect.
