After visiting the site, i decided very quickly to make a large focus of the house to be on the view looking out over the city. I planned to have the gallery at the front where it could be viewed by people passing by on the street.
Inspired by some of the coffee shops in Balmain (which appear to be a regular home, only to be revealed as a coffee shop upon entry) as I felt this created a homely feel, which i wanted to recreate in the house. I wanted it to be a house first, and a gallery second.
Using Google sketch up to model drafts I was quickly able to work out some very rough draft ideas. This shows the first concept.
Further Development
After developing my ideas further I tried to create an architecture that drew the occupants towards the back of the house where they can experience the view in the public areas. By making the back of the house a public lounge room and kitchen, I hope to create an environment where the artist and his daughter can spend time together for family dinners.
